Bad neighbor refuses to pitch in to replace shitty fence. Crap-ass wooden fence stays up, wobbling all the time. Bad neighbor's nonsocialized dogs keep scrabbling and barking and snarling at the fence and have torn a board down, almost wide enough to get through and are worrying at the next one.

I wonder -- should I simply inform neighbor that a good fence prevents dogs from biting people who are friends with hungry young lawyers? Should I accidentally leave my leftover antifreeze reallllly close to the hole in the fence? Should I cover the whole with razor wire? Should I store my leftover syringes face up on the ground near this broken section of fence? Rat traps baited with liver? Wire nooses? Snap traps?

Or just hanging out near the hole with a board and whacking every dog nose that pokes through until the silence lulls me asleep?

I'm open to suggestions here.

My wife has a private business as a massage therapist. Fairl tough work -- can handle maybe four clients a day. It's a bit like physical therapy in that respect. I've helped her a bit with her office and the approach to it, decorating and keeping the place clean and stuff. Helped her advertise, make cards, do flyers, etc.

We move into a new place, a bigger place. There's a room and a separate entrance that is perfect for her business.

According to the city, however, because her business requires customers enter the property (mine does not -- I do mail order), she has to notify all residents within some large area. 500 feet, I think. She is required to get the addresses, stamp and address the envelopes, and then take these envelopes to the city, where they will be stuffed with the proper announcement and mailed. This had just gone into the charter, so no one had done it before. We were the lucky first-timers. New people in the neighborhood testing the new laws.

The announcement is supposed to be just asking people for input on the impact of the business, and urges that people address issues that are reflected by rules of the city charter. In other words, don't make shit up.

We hear nothing for weeks until a neighbor (a good neighbor) comes by, shaking their head. They show us what the city ACTUALLY sent out. The form is just a slight revamp of their ZOMING form, and the way they describe her business makes it sound like a massage parlour. In other words, this document makes it look as if we want the city to re-zone the neighborhood to allow for an adult business!

Evidently, the neighbors have all decided to meet and work up a concerted effort to get the city to refuse her business license. Angry phone calls to the city happen by neighbors (and one particularly grumpy ol' bastard in particular). Many angry letters are written, including one from the "nice" little old lady across the street. Her letter was typed, except for the "How would you like THIS across the street from YOU!" scrawled across the bottom.

Our liason at the city was amazed at the vitriol. I think her exact quote was "Gee, your neighbors really must hate you!"

All of these letters are public property, of course, much to their dismay, because I ask the city to send me copies of all their letters and one-by-one, I go to each neighbor and tell them how disappointed I was that they never once bothered to come by and actually MEET us and talk with us. One woman refused to answer her door or ever contact us. Another fella, once he knew why I was there, refused to talk with me at all. One guy thought that I HAD to come around by law (no, you moron -- that's a "sex offender" -- I'm just a "neighbor").

One neighbor was openly hostile to us for years afterwards, even getting into a screaming match with my wife one day (I lectured him on acting like some kind of child and to act like an adult if he expected to be treated like an adult and he actually settled down a bit). He spent a lot of time on the phone with the city trying to shut our business down, evenbtually to the point where the city told him to stop calling and that he didn't know what he was talking about. Then they called us and informed us that we had a particularly nasty neighbor.

Of course, by this time, we had already figured that out.

Picture this, he had created a veritable little coffee lounge, soft furnishings, coffee table, coffee maker and all the paraphenalia, all inclusive of atmospheric lighting provided by the fibreglass spray lantern with rotating colour range.
"Milk, sugar?" he asked me while i sunk speechlessly into one of the velvetine armchairs..He even dimmed the lights to show me the beautiful lights... (and no its not what you think):
He told me near tears, about how much he had wanted to move into this house himself, but their son (13) refusd to move the 8 miles, and now he just had to visit (everyday), as his mothers commemorative cross was also on the property..

Hi Atom and others,
I need to get the neighbours off my land. I have been living a genuine witch hunt for a while as these guys try to intimidate, hunt and shoot at me. They were also killing game on my land and parading around until I took off after one to bash his head in (in intent anyway) and called the police which cooled them off pretty quick. I am wedged in between two such neighbours. One that is into black magic. The other that is into ploughing into me with his QUAD and car (the deaf wife which is ongoing a Linda Blair metamorphosis (from the Exorcist) in my presence), staging constant harassment with family and friends (sometimes a hundred people parading around, no less, along "the border" which is being extended yard by yard into my land) and seriously attempting to destroy my reputation, turning my hired help against me on account that I am a single woman and inviting people to join the witch-hunt that surprisingly almost always raise to the bait (especially guys that are not doing very well, common locally). That neighbour is also reputed very crazy (wonder why). He is also a cheap thief as my former mail-box is now adorning the front of his house etc...And the women are even more macho/psycho. Members of my step-family also drop by to yell at me and enter the house without knocking, throwing oil on the general insanity.
Both neighbours have shot at me and are keeping a constant watch on my person (neither work) obsessing over my every move (great for the inner narcissist shouldn’t it be but is not). I have the best game territory and they have gotten use to renting my territory to hunters for a lot of money. They also run a well organised poacher's ring, but are cowards very touchy of their reputation (which explains why I haven't been killed yet).
The first guy owes me money and is physically (and mentally) ill. I could dislodge him with a good lawyer. The second guy is also physically (and mentally) ill, and known to abuse everyone’s land (the other neighbours are grateful for the containing but not willing to lend much of a helping hand). The latter is cognizant of the law and careful in his intimidation. However, he teleguides crazies and machos and could have more success than even he expects. I hear he is having a nervous break-down over my presence. he claims I am not a real woman.
The last policeman I called (and I am careful not to disturb these precious but I must for strict survival) got mad at me and told me to move out (he was not very bright). They all got into guy speaks and didn’t make any logical sense. At this point, the game wardens are waiting for the police to do something (they told me to call the police on account of the gunfire) and the police is doing strictly nothing. I am now writing the Chief of police a registered letter and sending a copy to the head game warden.
I have a profession and am gaining a good reputation with the local important people. I just want everything to blow over, theses crazies to meet their karma/ move on/ not set the place on fire and I want the run of my land as it should be.
I moved to the country for the peace and quiet, none of which I’m getting. I also feel I have moved back in time into the fifties. At least I am breathing the fresh country air and fuming in a non-polluted environment.

We own a house in a nice suburban neighborhood outside of Philadelphia. I try to be a good, considerate neighbor. However, the folks in the huge house down the hill behind us have a teenage son that likes to sit in the driveway and blast his bass-dominant music. I'll be sitting in my house, windows closed, minding my own business, when the windows start to rattle and all I hear is "th-thrum-bump, th-thrum-bump..." Grrrrr. To make matters worse, I'm 6 months pregnant, a bit on the hormonal side, and worried sick that the little whipper snapper is going to continue to do this after the baby is born. I once asked him to turn it down, only to have him defiantly turn it up. Sure, if it's after 10pm, I can call the police, but these aren't the type of folks I want to infuriate as per previous experiences with them. Here's one of those previous gems:

The folks behind us are also avid hunters. Live and let live, I say. However, one Autumn afternoon I sat down at my kitchen table to have a sandwich. My kitchen table looks out over my deck, onto to my beloved bird feeders, down into the back property of our troublesome neighbor. Since the leaves were off of the trees, a fresh horror immediately caught my eye amongst the browned scenery: a bright red, freshly skinned deer carcass, centered perfectly within my view. Only then did I notice the large shadows circling over my deck—vultures. (I have them on video tape.) In our area, it is a health hazard to have unburied remains in a residential area. So I was the grinch that called the Health Department anonymously. Perhaps they suspect... and thus, the new issue. I don't know. All I ask as a woman gestating is to allow me (and in the future, my child) to nap in peace. Am I being an old fuddy duddy? I mean, I listened to my heavy metal back in the 80s the same way, but I was at least considerate of the neighbors or my parents would've had my head!

Long story short we had bought some new furniture about a week and a half ago and we were putting it together kinda late at night, I'd say from about 10pm till 230, but we didnt have any major power tools going at all, mostly a hammer that was tapped so as to not make much noise.

well last Sun our downstairs neighbor was BLASTING her crazy Gypsy King music at about 9am and so I was getting pissed by about 1045 so I got up from bed and stomped on the floor a few times to let her know that it was bothersome. She eventually turned off the music, but then today my bf gets a phone call from the manager saying that the bitch wrote a letter complaining about us making noise until late in the night, and that I was living there.

She totally ratted us out, so I'm pissed.

I'm thinking of taking the letter she wrote(Since she decided to do it behind our backs instead of coming to us first) and knocking on her door with it.

I'll simply hand her the letter and ask why she felt she couldn't have come to us with the complaint? I'll apologize, but I'll also have to remind her that if she doesn't want me writing congress a letter about her abuse of the Gypsy Kings music at 9am on Sunday morning, next time just call my cellphone, and we'll stop making noise.

I don't want to have to go on battling our neighbors, plus we have the nicest apartment in the whole complex, and I think other people get jealous over that.

In the few weeks since my offer was accepted, the trash in the yard beside this house not only hasn't been picked up, there's more trash. I'm worried about the type of person who cares so little for his environment that he would just throw trash in his yard. I haven't actually seen a person around. There are two cars and I guess he and his friends are just hanging out at night talking and throwing cans on the ground after drinking. Strangely enough, it's very few beer cans. Teetolling litterbugs?

I wonder if there's some way to get out of buying this house. I'm having serious misgivings about buying a house that I'd be embarassed to invite friends to.

Anyone ever faced this problem? Any suggestions on getting out or advice on living with trashy neighbors?

My upstairs neighbors like to get really drunk and sing along with the stereo well into the night (like 3am). I have spoken to them about this more than a dozen times, and have gone up to speak to them after 3am at least 5 times, I even wrote them a letter.

They always seem surprised that I can hear them, and turn it down, but not off (it's right over my bed and the base makes the walls rattle). When they are sober they apologize and say it won't happen again, and then it does.

How do I escalate this to make them understand it's not acceptable? Do I call the police? My landlord? I'm not sure either are going to do anything about it.

I've never had this kind of problem in the past. In my experiences of having loud neighbors in the past once they knew how much I could hear, they were very respectable about the noise, but not these people.
It so sucks.

they've already left empty bottles and various other trash there . . . and it kinda makes me feel a bit unsafe to find a large group of people pretty much right outside my home, loitering.
just the same, i'm not entirely certain what to do.
do i let it go and just hope it's not a regular thing, or do i jump on being the first one to ruin the fun if i catch them again?

i know they're just from around the neighborhood, so it's not like they haven't got anywhere to go . . . so i suppose i'm justified in wanting to make them leave, but i dislike the idea of being a ruiner of fun.

Most of us moved into the house around the same time, about 1 1/2 months ago. A few weeks in I heard him slamming doors and yelling. My other house-mates said he was yelling out of his window and banging on their doors in the middle of the night. He claims that someone is taking his shit.

After a few weeks of this we all had a meeting and asked him to leave. There's one woman who lives there and she told him that she didn't feel safe around him. Half the time he seemed to not understand what we were trying to get across. Finally he said he would look for a new place to live. The owner of the house even offered to refund his money and help him search.

That was over a month ago. I asked him recently how the search was going and he said that he had found a place but the owner was out of town so he couldn't close the deal. He's told the others this as well. I think its bullshit.

He's been laying very low lately. I rarely see him but now he and his room smell very bad. It's like spoiled food and really bad BO with a musky aftertaste. His room is on the floor above mine but I can smell it from downstairs.

I had this falling down drunk, banging the walls late at night, blasting the same Spanish (or Mexican) song over and over and over again and singing at the top of his lungs, yelling to friends, smoking in the hallway guy living next door to me for almost a year. It was so loud that the banging even scared my cats into running to the bedroom closet.

Most of it I could begrudgingly live with, except when he kept me awake playing that same stupid song so loudly that I couldn't even have a conversation on the phone, because the person I was talking to would not be able to hear me. The song would end and he'd immediately start it up again and I'm not exaggerating when I tell you he'd repeat this process for an entire day, several times a week.

However, I have had some very bad neighbor karma over the past ten years or so, so I decided it just wasn't worth it to try doing anything about him, until the building manager said she was trying to get this neighbor evicted and would like me to call and leave reports on her machine no matter what time of day or night. I did so exactly once, and felt so shitty about it afterwards that I swore I'd never do it again. I realized that, although I found this person to be a horrid neighbor, he wasn't deliberately or maliciously doing anything to annoy me--he was just living his life the way he wanted to. How could I fault him for that?

The manager had also requested that I rat on the people across the hall from me, where a young unwed mother had moved in after the birth of her two screaming twins with her even louder screaming one-year old. Before that, it was just Grandma, who I hardly ever noticed, except when she'd have her all day family parties which required leaving the door open because there'd be more people than would fit inside the apartment all at once.

For some reason this delightful family seemed to think it was a good idea to leave their apartment door open most of the time and share the noise with everyone. Generally, I'd grit my teeth and turn up the music, or pull the pillow over my head. I had the din coming at me from both sides of the apartment.

Then a funny thing happened.

Someone new bought the building and took most of the authority away from the manager. They installed security cameras all over the place, which I wasn't very happy about, in theory, but which allowed them to see who was doing what, where, and when. This quickly led to falling down drunk guy being gone, followed shortly by screaming children family.

My lease is up at the end of this month and I thought I'd have to move yet again in hopes of regaining some semblance of sanity. Now I'm thinking I might just be able to stay.

The worst thing I've had to endure lately was a new neighbor playing the Bee Gees at top volume last night. Though it was somewhat annoying, it was bearable and when the album ended, *this* neighbor didn't start it over.

so, having barely moved into my new place, my housemate, who drives a motorcycle, comes home and parks his bike, only to have some crazy lady come out in her pajamas and start yelling at him about how he can't park his bike there.
she goes on and on about how "there are RULES, here," and starts giving him a hard time, without doing two things:
introducing herself, OR asking about whether or not he's the new neighbor.

he tries to explain how he pretty much needs to park his bike where he's put it because otherwise it can be seen from the street, which could lead to its being stolen, but instead of being understanding, she then starts going on about how there was a guy who lived here before who drove her crazy because he drove a motorcycle . . . which basically just means she really just doesn't like motorcycles, and it has nothing to do with where he's chosen to park. in the meantime, my housemate and i made note of the fact that _her_ car hadn't moved for about three days . . . which basically means that she has no life, nowhere to go, and nothing better to do than harass her neighbors about where they park their vehicles, stating some obscure idea of there being RULES, while all the units are, to my knowledge, owned by different landlords.
in any case, a few days later, unit numbers showed up, stuck to the parking spaces--which weren't there before, meaning SHE was the one who put them there--and i'm seriously considering taking them all down, because it seems to me that she is trying to enforce something which only SHE really cares about, while the rest of us are willing to do things like share.
really, the lady needs to get a hobby, because this is the stupidest situation i've ever had to deal with in my entire life.

I wish I didn't care so much but it drives me bonkers that these people who live across the little courtyard from me have a kid that starts screaming intermittently day and night.
